Gary Comer Youth Center Welcomes First Lady Michelle Obama and Spouses of Foreign Leaders

First Lady Michelle Obama and the spouses of the NATO Summit and G8 foreign leaders will visit Gary Comer Youth Center this Sunday, May 20 at 11:30 a.m. Guests will learn about the Youth Center’s innovative educational and extracurricular programs, view dance and cultural performances by Chicago-area youth, and enjoy a private lunch created by Chef Paul Kahan, who has worked with Youth Center culinary students in preparing the meal.
First Lady Michelle Obama will provide guests with a full tour of the Youth Center facility, highlighting the Youth Urban Agriculture Program held at the rooftop garden, recording studio, visual arts studio, dance and fitness studio, the culinary program and more. Performances will be conducted by the South Shore Drill Team, the Muntu Dance Theater and the Soul Children of Chicago.
“Our goal is to provide programs and resources that ensure our youth members succeed in school and are empowered to seek their full potential in life,” said Greg Mooney, Gary Comer Youth Center’s Executive Director. “We are honored to welcome First Lady Michelle Obama and her distinguished guests and to demonstrate how we have been able to make a difference on Chicago’s South Side.”
Located in the Grand Crossing community, the Gary Comer Youth Center was established in 2006 with a mission to provide area youth with diverse educational and extracurricular enrichment that will equip them to graduate high school prepared to pursue college and meaningful careers. More than 1,000 youth members utilize the Center’s education and support services. Currently, 97 percent of Youth Center seniors are on track to graduate high school and 94 percent have been accepted into a four year college.
“We are addressing a critical need that transcends all countries and cultures, and requires significant commitment and resources,” added Mooney. “We hope that the spotlight on our model inspires others to invest in our youth the world over.”
The organization was founded by the late Gary Comer, founder of Lands’ End. Additional programs and services offered within the 80,000-square-foot facility include academic tutoring, college readiness courses, leadership training, health and wellness services, media training, performing arts and technology, among others.
The Gary Comer Youth Center campus was expanded in 2008 with the creation of Gary Comer College Prep in partnership with the Noble Network of Charter Schools. Comer College Prep, whose students make use of the Youth Center’s facilities and extracurricular activities, is graduating 100 percent of its Class of 2012, and 100 percent have been accepted into a four year college. Many students will be attending top-100 schools such as Dartmouth, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, University of Southern California, Boston College, Carnegie-Mellon and more.

Euro 2012 is on its way, and with it comes the promise of glory for an as-yet unknown group of players. Football is often a game consumed by the immediate spectacle, by the bright lights; but, away from the pitch, the game contains more challenges than ever before.
‘In my last few years of working with Premier League players, primarily those from Africa, I have seen the pressures upon them growing steadily greater. Club football is now truly globalised, meaning a fiercer competition for team places, and an expectation of elite performance with little to no time to get used to their new surroundings. Though a career at the peak of the game brings remarkable financial rewards, it becomes harder to reach and remain at that peak with each passing year.
As a lawyer, I have seen my role transform to meet their evolving needs of these players, and to help them to maximise the considerable commercial opportunities that are available to them. I’ve found myself doing everything from arranging sponsorship deals to personal promotion, holidays, global investments, high fashion, tailoring and picking out the colours of curtains for a player’s new house. Facebook’s app and website were accessed by nearly three-fourths of U.S. Android smartphone users in March, making it the most used social networking website and app on the Android platform, according to new SmartMeter* data from leading market research company, The NPD Group’s Connected Intelligence®. Facebook is maintaining its social networking strength as the proportion of Android smartphone users accessing its mobile app and website has held steady over the past six months.
With Facebook far and away the overall market leader in social networking, Twitter is a distant second, with 23 percent and 18 percent reach in web and apps, respectively, while Google+ is struggling to find its place even among Android users – with 16 percent reach in web, and fluctuating between 10 and 15 percent reach in apps for the past nine months.
It’s no surprise that Facebook is so popular, as social networking is one of the most highly utilized activities for U.S. Android smartphone users, second only to search among mobile web activities overall and fifth among apps (behind search, webmail, maps/navigation and games). Even though social networking engagement is highly saturated, consumer engagement in Facebook has been resilient.
Facebook users spend over 15 minutes a day, almost 470 minutes a month, using the Facebook app on their Android smartphones. While it’s half the time users spend on a mobile game, the fluid nature of social networking apps translates into frequent dips – with Facebook users opening the app an average of 6 times per day. Facebook’s website comprised 10 percent of all page views for Android smartphone users in March.
“Ultimately, Facebook’s mobile success rests on delivering compelling mobile app and web experiences, and monetizing on these experiences,” said Linda Barrabee, research director, NPD Connected Intelligence. “In order to do this, Facebook needs to ensure that monetization efforts via advertising enhance and do not disrupt the mobile social consumer experience; and with Facebook’s IPO looming and trading expected to begin on May 18, all eyes are on the company.”

Hotze Health & Wellness Center (HHWC), a world leader in the alternative health care industry, launched its New Life for a Very Special School campaign today on Facebook, to raise awareness and give back to the New Life School Guatemala, a non-profit school for children with special needs. The school was founded in 2000 by HHWC guest, Judy Kerschner, when she learned that children with disabilities were not allowed into public schools. The New Life School Guatemala is a licensed primary school for grades pre-kinder through sixth grade, and provides these children an opportunity to receive an education rather than staying hidden in their homes.
HHWC founder and CEO, Dr. Steven Hotze, hopes that in addition to raising money, the campaign will bring greater awareness to the organization.
“The New Life School hasn’t received the attention it deserves and they need our help,” said Dr. Hotze. “This organization is changing the lives of children who otherwise would have been ostracized in their community, and it is teaching an entire village how to show them compassion.”
In under a minute, Facebook users will have the opportunity to give back to an organization that provides hope to children who otherwise would be denied an education. One hundred percent of donations are applied towards the children’s needs and the operation of the school including medical care and wheelchairs, teaching materials and supplies, and teacher salaries.
Fans are also encouraged to share the campaign with their Facebook friends in order to help raise additional money and bring awareness to the organization.
